Sebring SMX

Just like the past few years, Mateo opened the race season at Sebring with the SCCA Super Tour. Unlike the last 3 years, he was not driving the Formula F, but in a Spec MX-5. New car, new team (sort of), TKG Motorsports and new challenges.

As seems to be the case for Sebring we had some cold, some sun and some rain. All factored into the weekend results.

First up was a practice day. Spent some time figuring out the track in a different car. This year’s format was 2 qualifying sessions and 2 races. The Friday morning qualifying session was cold and fast. Unfortunately a transmission issue brought Mateo in after only one lap putting him at the back of those that set times.

The team did a fantastic job getting the car ready for the afternoon qualifying session. Mateo was quick, finishing with the 4th fastest lap in the session. The downside was the track conditions had deteriorated with more cars and higher temps so that when combined with session 1, Mateo’s starting position was P19.

Race 1 on Saturday was in mixed conditions, making tire choice a challenge. The track was drying out, so we took a chance on dry tires hoping to make up some positions later in the race. It was still pretty slick and cars were sliding and spinning. No one went faster so starting order for Race 2 was the same although it was dry this time. Finished 21 and DNF. Overall forgettable results but definitely a learning experience. Time to take those lessons to Road Atlanta next…
