Road Atlanta, Part 1

The SCCA Hoosier SuperTour Event at Michelin Road Atlanta this past weekend was the first of two March races at the track. The first Formula Race Promotions event of the 2023 will be there in 2 weeks, so this was a great opportunity to get some solid practice laps in under competitive conditions. It turned out that it was a great event to give us a little bit of everything.

Friday started in wet conditions for the first qualifying session. In only a limited number of races, Mateo has managed to see wet conditions in most of them at some point. He was the second fastest, 0.286 off the pace with a fast lap of 1:43:847. Not all of the competitors went out in the rain, knowing that the conditions were set to improve and times would as well. Sure enough, the sun came out and dried the track for the afternoon qualifying session. In Q2, Mateo also ended up finishing P2 with a time of 1:31:374, only 0.374 off the pole setting pace.

Saturday’s race in dry conditions was hyper competitive. There were numerous lead changes before the yellow flags came out near the end of the race. The top 5 all finished within a second of each other, with Mateo finishing just off the lead group in 6th.

Sunday saw the return of the rain with cold, wet conditions. Mateo started P4, but quickly moved up as 3 of the cars pulled away early. It was a 16-lap race between the top 3 with each leading the race at various points. The race finished early under yellow with Mateo earning a third-place podium finish.

The biggest success of the weekend was getting lots of laps, in different weather conditions, from the front row to the midpack and back again in preparation for the FRP F1600 race in 2 weeks. Looks to be a great field of competitive F1600 racing!

Thanks to Team Pelfrey for putting a fantastic car together for us, my grandparents for coming to support me and Ares Elite Sports Vision for their support.
